Sacramento Scottish Rite
Sacramento Scottish Rite

Last month I commented on the quality of the entertainment at our Installation of
Officers. The theme of that evening, and for the coming year, is “Return the Magic to
the Rite”. The featured performer was Phil Ackerly, a Las Vegas quality magician.
This was a special evening for me because in both high school and college I dabbled in
magic. My wife relates that one of the first times she noticed me, was during a college
show when I was onstage performing.
I was attired in a white tie and tails outfit. I expect my garb was more outstanding than
my act. Well although I don’t do any stage magic anymore, I like to think there is still
a bit of “magic” in our marriage.
Speaking of magic, if you have not been in regular attendance at stated meetings, you
may have missed not only the magic show in January, but another terrific performance
in February when the Sheldon High School Jazz Band performed its magic! What an
outstanding evening. The band had at least thirty members including a number of
outstanding solo performers. They received a tremendous ovation and we hope to
invite them back in the future. If you missed either of these performances, make
plans to now to join us at coming events and experience the remainder of the year’s
Magic.
That is part of what is happening here in Sacramento, but you realize that in
addition to these events in Sacramento, things are happening in the Scottish Rite
Clubs in nine other locations in Superior California. Each of the Clubs have
meetings throughout the year. We are trying to get more information from the
Clubs into our Scottish Rite News so that we can encourage attendance at their
meetings. In the meantime, if you want a fun mini-vacation, head up north to tie
into a Club meeting. Get yourself a copy of the latest AAA Northern California
tour book and check out some of the neat motels and bed and breakfast facilities
you will find listed. A great example is The Rosenberry House B&B in Susanville.
It costs just a bit over $100 a night and includes a great breakfast. It is within
walking distance (one block) from the Rosenberry House to where the Club
meets. Finally, I should mention the McCloud Hotel, which is a Four Diamond
facility just a short drive from one of our Club areas.
Now let’s shift gears a bit. I’ve talked about working a Club meeting into a
short trip out of the Sacramento area. Now I’ll expand the idea to cover what
many of you are now doing. As you travel throughout the country, research the
existence of a historic Masonic building in the cities you pass through. Many of
these locations have a site on the internet. Just check ahead. I’ve mentioned some
of these places in previous articles. Some of these outstanding locations that have
been mentioned before are Freemason’s Hall in Philadelphia; the Scottish Rite
Cathedral in Indianapolis which is known as one of the most beautiful Masonic
buildings in the world; and the George Washington Masonic Memorial where
our own Tony Wordlow will be the President of the Board next year.
One of the locations I’ve not mentioned is the Scottish Rite building in Santa Fe,
New Mexico. This building is patterned after the Court of the Lions at the
Alhambra in Granada, Spain. And don’t forget those historical Blue Lodges you
will find in almost every town you pass through. These Masonic buildings are
peopled by some of the most gracious individuals you will ever meet. If you are
out traveling around, be it Northern California or the wider travel throughout
the country, take time to meet your brethren as you travel from place to place.
