REMEMBRANCE AN D RENEWAL
On March 30 at 7:00 p.m., the Chapter Knights Rose Croix
will celebrate the Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal.
Again this year of 2010 we will NOT celebrate Maundy
Thursday or Easter Sunday Services as we have in the past.
The clubs, however, are at liberty to celebrate Maundy
Thursday if they so choose.
Confusion reigns in the Valley as to why we changed from
Maundy Thursday to Remembrance and Renewal. In the
past, Freemasonry has observed this special day and
Brethren have gathered throughout the world to reaffirm
their faith in the universal fraternity of mankind. The first
written record of such observance is a ritual of the
Eighteenth Degree which Charles de Ladebat prepared and
published in 1856 in New Orleans.
The Code of Statutes adopted in 1866 lists Maundy Thursday
as a feast day and, as of 1878, the statutes named its
observance as obligatory.
However, in deference to the rites of churches, in 1994 it
was deemed appropriate that the Maundy Thursday
observance be ruled non obligatory for the Scottish Rite.
A “Celebration of Remembrance and Renewal” should then
replace the traditional Maundy Thursday observance and be
held near the Vernal Equinox, March 20.
The Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal, including the
Mystic Banquet, is NOT a religious observance. It is neither
the feast of the Passover nor a Sacrament of Holy
Communion, although it commemorates the spirit of both
days. What this program does recognize is the passing of our
Brothers in the past year and the renewal of life. As the
hills here change from brown to green, the peach blossoms
appears, our spirits lift as we see the end of winter.
We Scottish Rite Masons are dedicated to renewal
and continuation of life, both individually and for the
Scottish Rites Bodies.
